September 7, 2008 Fog, Stars and Desoto Lake Steam

Thick low fog again with clear skies! I didn't think it would do it again or get that cold this night. Wound up getting down to about 42 and being as thick or thicker than the morning before. I told my sister I'd meet her, her daughter and my uncle at Desoto the next morning, otherwise I would have driven back to Murray Hill. It was tempting the crap out of me, because I knew it was the good low thick stuff again, that I could drive above at Murray Hill. This amount while having clear skies about 100 feet above is just not terribly common.

House in the fog along highway 30 west of Missouri Valley Iowa. Several of them use this more green colored lighting. I got out and took the shot, hoping to not be shot at or anything. That or meeting some "friendly" doggies.

Road to Wilson Island. Something is so cool about this thick low fog to me, seeing super bright stars above. Your brain thinks low low visibility till it looks up, then thinks damn, that is so freaking clear. Looks like my brake lights have halos. I guess they do.

Road to Desoto or Wilson Island, around 6:15 a.m., 40 minutes before sunrise. 400mm view I think. Why does the best lighting have to come and go so darn fast!

Wind blown steam on Desoto Lake 30 minutes before sunrise.

There is a "happy" blur zone of around 2 seconds with this stuff. Too fast of a shutter and you freeze the scene. Too slow and you lose the sense of motion and wind up with just a hazy scene. This works well until it gets lighter and lighter and you are forced to stop way down.

I'm on a beach, so the water looks dark with the dark sand underneath. Just the steam on top looks lighter.

This isn't cropped in at all. The deer was about 2-3 car lengths away from me. One of these I took I still had mirror lock up on. That is always fun. You push the button expecting to take the shot, but only the mirror locks up, leaving you unable to see through the view finder. So you snap again, then find mirror lock up in the menu and quickly disable it, hoping the shot is still around.

"Hmmmm, I forgot where mom told me to meet her." Scratching its head, get it? "haha" I know.
