July 19, 2008 Northeast NE LP Supercell + Desoto Bend Iowa NWR All Night Fishing With Lightning/Storm and Moon

Chased this supercell from nw of Center NE to east of Norfolk. I don't think it was ever severe warned. It seemed to be really struggling with the cap. This was south of the town of Wausa or something like that.

The east side of the updraft looked really nice a few times.

Dustin Wilcox can be seen going back to his car here. I finally found Steve Peterson a few minutes after this. This is the one nice thing about the "slower"(not as great storms) summer months, few chasers, and the ones you see you often know.

I thought it was going to turn into a beast about now, but it didn't.

Heading south on highway 81. You can see how string beany the updraft is now. I've never seen a storm do better once it looks like that. I was amazed how long it managed to stay a storm after this point though, slowly getting skinnier.

Bob had informed me there was an all nighter fishing thing at Desoto Bend this night, the one of those they have a year. How nice this worked out like it did! Made it back to town and over there just in time for this. This was one of the first images once we setup. This is the one night a year you can be in there on the lake after dark. You can see some decent mammatus in the anvil.

I kept noticing the anvil being a little illuminated, and figured it had to be the moon coming up. Pretty soon, there she was, shining through the clouds. I think the above image was a longer exposure and using 400 ISO. You can really get the city lights to show on the clouds doing that(the right side is towards Omaha).

Pretty cool with the boats moving around and the moon rays shining left onto the storm now.

Moon now clearly visible through an opening in the clouds, still a yellow/orange color as it is low in the sky.

I'm sure I'm using 100 ISO now and rather long exposure over a minute or so.

Slow moving boat crossing the scene! Makes for a rather "other wordly" shot. The shutter was open for a minute and a half on this one, since the boat was moving so slowly.

Quite a while later we finally get a couple new storms to fire and cross the same path as the first one. The updraft had some pretty cool cloud to air bolts.

I put the 100-400 on to shoot the people fishing on the shore in the moonlight. Guessing this was 100 ISO for several seconds.

To freeze the ripples more I ISO'd up to 1600 and only did a couple second shot.

That's from the image before. The moonlight really lit things up. You really couldn't see that guy over there with your eyes. He's also obviously smoking, which looks kind of cool.

Here is a short youTube video of several 30 second exposures of the above.
