August 7/8th, 2008 Morning Fog and Fog Bow, Desoto Bend Iowa

Here are a few images from 2 different mornings, shot at the wild life refuge in Iowa, Desoto Bend. The first morning I hadn't planned on waking up, I can thank one of my cats for that. I saw no fog out my window, but wanted donuts, so I got up and went up town. I then drove by the river to look for any fog. It was thick as hell in Iowa, so back to my apartment I went, to grab my camera stuff. Sun rising above a corn field in the refuge above.

This would be my first fog bow I've ever seen. I want to find more of them now.

The scene above the Missouri River looked really cool, since direct sunlight was now hitting it. I had to run through a bunch of waist high, soaking wet grass, to get the shot over there. It was worth it, though the itching did suck.

I love fog. It's nice this time of year, since it wasn't that terribly cold out, upper 50s or so. Much warmer than looking for steam/fog when there is ICE floating in the water, like THIS day. That is kind of funny, only 80 degrees warmer on this one.

I'm still smacking myself over this one. I wanted to check out this road for possible sun rays. I pull up and sure enough, rays of light shining down on it. Thing is, there was a freaking deer standing right by the rays when I stop, right in the middle of the road. My telephoto lens wasn't on yet though! By the time I get it switched, the deer had walked into the trees. I watched him do so, in no hurry at all...but just fast enough to beat me in my lens changing efforts. Deer are always on this road in the morning, I should have known and been ready before pulling up. Good thing there will be plenty more ops for this...well maybe. The sun was directly above the road here. I'm going to need more fog scenes before the sun angle changes too much.

This is now the next morning, on the 8th. I woke up for fog on this one, but temps had not dropped like they were supposed to. Not till right at sunrise did the fields start producing fog. Then it was like a switch was thrown, like the air over the field just reached the threshold and bam, out comes the fog.

Flowing from one field to another.

Sunrise, same area on the east side of the refuge.

Not a terrible couple of mornings, but I was expecting more, at least on the second one. At least the fields did this right as the sun came up. I'd been up since a little after 3 a.m. wondering exactly why I was out trying.
