August 9, 2007 Local Shelf and Lightning
|
Not a whole lot to type on this one. I intercepted this line slamming into town around midnight. All I want to do with local convection anymore is to capture close lightning bolts. Since I couldn't go use the picnic area again(kicked out of there last time), I had to find a new spot. I am using a car wash on the south side of town. Bad thing with in town locations would be lights, as well as powerlines. I don't mind the powerlines much as all I really want is to capture super close bolts, and for those the scene doesn't have to be all that "pretty" and free of clutter. Still though, I will probably scope out a new location next time. High speed shelf can be seen entering town above.

A fairly strange gap was noted to the thing, where lightning flashes were showing through.

I'm actually trying to shoot video and stills. A smart person would use two tripods to do that. Me, I try to handhold the video camera while changing settings on the still camera. That and I soon needed to hold the tripod, as the wind wanted to blow it over.

Wind just starting to hit. I'd guess they were around 60mph at times.

Looking south here.

Sometimes I'm not sure why I bother trying to shoot lightning with lines of convection. 99% of the time lines are simply horrible for photographing lightning. It's often all cloud to cloud stuff that you can't even see. The whole time it was storming you couldn't see any bolts. Nothing would come down to the ground either. There was constant thunder though, as crawlers like the above reached overhead, but hidden in rain and clouds. After the rain ends you can get a few crawlers sometimes. They usually aren't all that fantastic. I'd much rather have lightning striking 50 feet away!

Yeah, I just don't care for all the distractions/objects in this location. I'm having a hard time coming up with many other options that allow you to shoot in the rain. And when it is blowing this car wash isn't that great either. After a gust would blow by, you'd still have some wind come back in the other way, bringing spray with it. I think maybe I'll just find a better gas station canopy next time.

One of the very few decent CG's of the night. There's barely anything left to the storms now(and they are WAY south).

Right now the frequency was down to about a visible bolt of some sort, every 5 minutes. Not a great outing, but it's to be expected with a stupid line. It's funny just how much better complete crarp storms can be for lightning/CG's. I'll take those over a rampaging line any day. |
