September 18, 2005 Bartlett NE

This is north of Bartlett or east of Chambers NE. I think there were two tornado warnings in this complete mess. One was right ahead of other while a 3rd storm blew up south of them and moved north into them....hence this mess. |
As it worked through this and pushed south, the cold outflow air hit the very unstable air being fed wnw. I thought it was a complete loss as I got to the area but it quickly changed, albeit for a short period. |
I was talking with Steve Peterson at this point and had been saying it was a big mess. Now I'm saying it is seeming to get organized again with a new very "beefy" looking base forming. I sat here and took some stills as it moved southeast. |
I'm looking due west(that road runs west) and the majority of the motion is out and to the south. As it does this the area to the south on the far left of the pic is curling and pushing back north. It was outflow dominant from the get go but the shear in place wanted it to spin. Evidently there was enough instability in this area to give it enough vertical motion to allow some motion to push back north. One knows it won't last long as the storm adds to the already growing cold pool. |
There was enough motion now pushing back north that I started to get a bit worried about where this center of rotation would setup, if it indeed could fight off the cold pool for one last shot. It was getting closer to the highway and it was still unclear where this would setup, though it seemed likely to happen on me. |
I let it move closer, guessing odds were it was not going to be able to tornado. I watch it push just to my south. Well this new updraft base goes this direction while this growing nasty green core is overtaking me. This shot here is looking due south. I leave and drive under this as the rain was going to leave zero view of it. |
I'm now under it and there was really no rain and no wind. Then I notice rain bands flying due east down the road. I wonder if this was some hook and rfd wrapping around(which I assume it was in some fashion). |
I'm still not in much rain. I'm zoomed in here looking to the south. The motions are due east and hard in that core crossing the highway. I drive into this as I watch to my east. |
This fairly interesting lowering forms due east of me as the trees are bending over and rain blowing right towards it. On video there seems to be some minor rotation evident on the left side, towards the top, curling back to the south/right. |
It was quite low and I wouldn't doubt that this was what was called in as a tornado. It did not stay this low for very long at all. |
Finally back out of the storm, as the cold pool is racing outwards in all directions(south here). I can't think of any instance I've seen clouds move as quickly as these were. |
Much later coming into the town of Neligh NE. I had decided to punch the storm for something to do. I was in a good bit of hail for a long drive north as the storm moved east. Baseball hail was reported in this town but I did not see any. The hail was up to golfball with some tree branches being blown down. |
I'm now going se out of town, after finding water at least up to my car door at about 35mph(so lucky it didn't flood out the engine). This was such a horrible drive to Norfolk, with the storm tracking along the highway. It made me think some cases they should issue warnings for severe rain...seriously. This car ahead of me at one points vanishes, as do the lines, it was raining so hard. This hhad to be the hardest I've seen, at least being a tie with some other bad time. I come to a complete stop on the highway and can't see where I am on it. I roll down my side window and look to see where I am. Luckily when it does it THAT hard it lets up to just hard rather quickly. It is never fun seeing vehicles vanish ahead of you and lose all signs of road markings |
I was right by a road so I pulled off onto it. Cars were stopping behind me and deciding to do the same. It actually rains that bad one more time after I started going again. I was in this storm for at least an hour. I finally cleared its precip east of Norfolk. |
